Where old age takes you
Where old age takes you is watercolour and ink representation of the passing of age where man gets to grips with the latter part of life. Confronted with something like a pandemic the end of the branch he has now taken is literally a downfall towards the end of life or a hazard such as a fall.
Another in a line of illustrations done during the period of the global pandemic in which there was a lot of experimentation with colour in my illustration whilst i myself came to grips with the fact that 20 plus years without actually delving in the arts had left a void in which there were now things i needed to relearn and re-educate myself on; and where gaining confidence on my own ability was becoming the biggest battle of all.theraggedageGibraltarstephen ignacioignacioartistillustrationdrawingsketch
the final journey
Pencil drawing/illustration of an old man hiking down a winding path towards a golden horizon. Created at the peak of the second surge of the Covid-19 pandemic in Gibraltar when Gibraltar recorded 94 deaths the illustration was a way of breaking past the sadness lived through those days. With my partner working in the Covid wards of the elderly care facilities and knowing how her work could also bring the virus into our household the fears and anxieties lived through those days heightened the need to sometimes try and break away from the mental strains of a constant non-stop environment in which art was a way of escaping. Bringing colour to a scene was a way of breaking away for someone like myself where my inclination is towards black and whites and monos. The design brought its own stress in that it was uncomfortable working with colour but that became a focal point which in many ways helped to distract from the other more significant stress i was escaping from. the illustration because somewhat of a tribute to those who had passed away mainly the elderly who seemed to be becoming numbers when you knew that every loss was being felt as individuals by those who cared for them.

The pathway
Vibrant watercolour sketched created using an initial layer of coffee stains later dubbed with watercolour and then using a pen and ink to bring out the image. the image materialised from the shapes created from the watercolour and had not been preplanned or thought of, it emerged by itself

watercolour landscape
A watercolour landscape from the imagination, not that there was much imagination in it except the thought of lush greens and freedom to roam which at the time we could not do due to covid-19
