    Age does not forgive

Digital print of "Age does not forgive" a black ballpoint on paper illustration created by Stephen Ignacio.
Age does not forgive is a metaphoric representation through a surreal world of two persons seemingly elderly heading to thier home, a wooden cabin showing its age. Beyond them rounded hills, roundeed trees show that there is a worl beyond which is pruned and kept vibrant, whilst they head to the shadows under the trees and over growth.

"Dreams of a girl" is a fun loving illustration which could easily take you into a story. A child sleeps in the middle of a pathway where little creatures emerge from their hiding places, peering at her sleep. Like all good night-time stories this is where the story begins...

  • El Rey Moribundo

    El Rey Moribundo

Hi-res digital print taken from the original black ballpoint on paper illustration created by Stephen Ignacio titled "El Rey Moribundo".
The surrealist illustration is part of a collaborative project between Stephen Ignacio and Sandra Balvin based on a storyline created by the latter. El Rey Moribundo is an introduction to a surrealist world in which the king is the first character to be presented from the surreal world imagined through a combined effort. The king is depicted as a weak character, bed ridden, blind and unable to move, yet his power has shaped the way his world exists. A surrealist world created in the dark arts of surrealists imaginations in which the realities of real life intermix in the creation of a dream world which is not so much a dream world but a metaphorical representation of the real world.
Prints can be purchased by using the online purchasing options offerd on this site. The Original artwork will be made available on completion of the project as part of the overall collection.

  • Once upon a time ... a long time ago (maybe)

Once upon a time ... a long time ago (maybe)

"Once upon a time .. a long time ago (maybe)" is one of a series of images being worked on by Stephen Ignacio depicting his perception of what Gibraltar might have been like. The first in the series depicts two people, a male and a female, waiting for the drawbridge by Landport tunnels to be lowered so that they can enter the town of Gibraltar. From sketches dating back to the 15th century traders can be seen making their journey to the town of Gibraltar. The gates were at times closed to them, and with the Great Siege also came the military control of the town. Yet in the surrounding region people still lived who would try and sell their goods to make a living. Rising up early to reach the town as soon as they could so that they could make the first sale before others would arrive. There is no timestamp on when the illustration is based on, leaving it to the viewer to decide. The illustration tries to bring together a past which is still very much in existence now-a-days as Gibraltar, the affluent society, the wealthier of the neighbouring towns, continues to be the converging point for many a trader trying to sell their goods to make a living. Where the politics of the day become secondary when put against day to day life.

    Happy days

Digital print of "happy days" a black ballpoint on paper illustration created by Stephen Ignacio.
Based on the theme of equality, in which even with society still very much advocatig and suporting equality, behind closed doors the gender differences continue to exist. Whilst the male sleep the woman works, the children cling on and a living room is engulfed by the massive presence of television, ipads and technology which is represented by buttons on a wall.

  • La Princesa de Espaldas

    La Princesa de Espaldas

Digital print of "La Princesa de Espaldas" a black ballpoint on paper illustration created by Stephen Ignacio based on a surrealist collaborative project between Stephen Ignacio and Sandra Balvin. La Princesa de Esaldas is the daughter of El Rey Moribundo. In her world she walks with her head turned to what's behind her as ships float in the skies, people sleepwalk and a promenade of arches offers her new worlds whilst bounded by walls on either side. Also called "El camino delibes" the illustration takes part of the ideology metaphorically represented by the Spanish author Delibes in his book El Camino. The archways representing the tunnels to another world and acting like barriers. A metaphorical representation of the relationship between Gibraltar and its neighbouring Spanish town of La Linea where the political frontiers offer the barriers to the future whilst the archways, the physical barrier between the path both societies lead offer real different worlds which they cannot walk through due to the way they interact with their surroundings. In this case the Princessa de espaldas walks with her head turned to whats infront of her and never sees where she is walking, keeping to the path that has been set for her.

  • The nowhere landscape

    The nowhere landscape

Digital scan of a pen & ink with watercolour wash on paper illustration
The Nowhere landscape is a surrealist landscape in which the artist has created what is seemingly a gneric landscape scene of a place that does not exist. Two towns, parallel to each other, split by a woodland which could be anywhere, surrounded by hills. Where the linework accentuates the illustration over the colour wash.

  • Once upon a time, a long time ago, at a bar in Gibraltar

Once upon a time, a long time ago, at a bar in Gibraltar

Digital scan of a ballpoint pen on paper illustration
"Once upon a time, a long time ago, at a bar in Gibraltar" is a ballpoint illustration of what the artist perceives in his mind a scene at a bar in Gibraltar might have been lik. Based on local knowledge, a little historical facts the illustration tries to bring to the forefront a part of history which is usually excluded from tales of the past but which forms the essence of how a society developed.
The Once upon a time series of illustrations looks at what society might have been like.

Once upon a time, they hunted

Digital scan of a black ballpoint pen on paper illustration
"Once upon a time, they hunted" is part of the once upon a time collection of illustrations depicting scenes of Gibraltar which are not normally told but which are part of Gibraltar's folklore history.
Not to long ago Gibraltar's nature reserve had animals like foxes and rabbits roaming its slopes. As time went by some of these species dissapeared.
However, with many a smuggler who roamed the slopes, locals and traders stories through time tell of men and boys going out hunting for rabbits and birds.
